What’s New
CREATIVE CONDUCTING PROJECT:
A New Concert Ending for Mozart’s
Entführung aus dem Serail Overture
The combination of the two aspects of music-making, the
creative and re-creative, has led me into an exciting area
of musical endeavor....
I have discovered that much of classical music remains inaccessible
to listeners for a number of reasons: A piece may call for
a large number of instruments and be prohibitively expensive to perform;
it may exist in a form for unspecified instruments - this is true
of much of Early Music - or perhaps only in a version for keyboard. And
there is another category of piece which is seemingly out of reach:
orchestral music which forms part of a larger performance context,
and which for some reason has remained un-extracted from this setting. A
need can be felt for this kind of piece to be looked at again, in
a new light. In this way it can be lifted out of its more exclusive
surroundings, allowed to stand on its own, and made more readily
available to audiences.
This commissioned concert ending aims to facilitate a new version
of Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail overture,
one that meets the standards of authenticity of today’s symphony
orchestras. It is my hope that this version may become a resource
for musicians, audiences, and professional arts organizations.
